Aeromexico caught up in price fixing collusion probe
Mexico’s own probe into alleged airline price fixing has resulted in a dawn raid at the offices of Mexico’s largest airline, Grupo Aeromexico, a Reuters report says.
The country’s competition authority Cofece called at Aeromexico’s Mexico City headquarters unannounced earlier this year and took away copies of documents and computer hard drives.
Cofece has asked Aeromexico for details about its alliance agreements with other airlines, according to unnamed sources in the report.
Aeromexico is part of the SkyTeam Alliance and operates many code-sharing agreements with partner airlines.
It has applied to operate a joint venture agreement with Delta Air Lines which has a minority stake in the Mexican carrier.
The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a similar probe into collusion between US airlines accused of limiting capacity and working together to keep air fares high.
The Aeromexico raid was one of the first by Cofece since a new competition law was passed last year.
The law has been described as one of the most stringent in the world.
