After shocks still rocking Christchurch
Earthquake-hit central Christchurch might be reopened within days, local officials say.
More than two dozen buildings in central Christchurch are still off-limits.
According to an update from Tourism New Zealand, despite a continuing state of emergency and dozens of aftershocks following Saturday’s tremor, the airport is fully operational and car rental companies open.
Tourists are being told not to stay away from Christchurch but continue their visits to other parts of New Zealand.
There were flight delays at Christchurch International Airport yesterday after cracks appeared in the domestic terminal following the aftershocks, forcing its closure.
The terminal reopened after engineers checked the building and deemed it safe.
IHG’s three hotels in Christchurch remain open following the earthquake.
Crowne Plaza Christchurch, Holiday Inn City Centre Christchurch and Holiday Inn on Avon Christchurch are all structurally sound and operational.
Best Western hotels in Christchurch are still open and operating for business.
Best Western Camelot Motor Lodge and Best Western Clyde on Riccarton suffered minimal damage.
Cameron Bagrie, chief economist at ANZ bank, said, “If there’s an area that we will be watching pretty closely, it will be tourism arrivals; Christchurch accounts for about 22 percent of visitor arrivals in New Zealand.
“It’s a bit of a gateway, but I don’t think its going to be on the top of a lot of people’s travel hot spots at the moment,” he said.
