Agents to distribute responsible guides
Advantage Travel Centres and the Co-op Travel Trading Group have become the first agencies to overbrand new guides aimed at raising awareness of responsible tourism.
The Insider Guides, produced by The Travel Foundation, will spell out to holidaymakers a number of simple measures that can help local communities and contribute to local economies.
Among the aims is to rid the perception that responsible tourism is confined to eco and adventure tourism.
Travel Foundation director Sue Hurdle said: “There is a clear case for agents to provide responsible tourism information to their customers. The leaflet highlights some very simple ways in which every single customer can do something whether they are interested in more specialist ‘responsible tourism’ holidays or booking a sun and sea package.”
She said the guides will tap into the public desire to ‘give something back’ following the Indian Ocean tsunami.
Among the tips is to eat at local restaurants, buy local produce, turn off heating and air conditioning and avoid products made from plants or animals.
Advantage managing director John McEwan said: “All of us within the industry need to be taking steps, no matter how small, to encourage holidaymakers to think about their responsibilities whilst abroad.”
In addition to the deal with Advantage and CTTG, 5000 guides are being electronically distributed to agents.
