The expedition cruise ship which ran aground in Greenland has finally been freed.

It was helped back into deep water by an ocean research ship which went to its aid.

“Ocean Explorer has been pulled free by the Natural Institute’s fishing research ship TARAJOQ,” Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command posted on Facebook.

It was the second attempt by the TARAJOQ to free the ship after failing on Wednesday at high tide.

Ocean Explorer has over 200 people aboard.

It ran aground earlier this week.

When that happened, the nearest available vessel equipped to help was thought to be over 1,000 km away.

The ship got stuck in Alpefjord, within the Northeast Greenland National Park.

The research vessel’s owner, SunStone Maritime Group, said there was ‘no breach to the hull’ and all aboard are safe with no injuries.

There was also no sign of pollution or environmental damage, it said.

Aurora Expeditions also revealed that three passengers aboard had contracted Covid-19.
