Air Asia bags new revenue source
KUALA LUMPUR – Air Asia has rolled out the mantra of low cost carriers in telling the public that it will now be slugged for checking their luggage on all flights after April 21.
“AirAsia believes that guests should be given the option to choose the services they require and pay only for those services,†was the airline’s way of saying that it would keep advertised fares low, but charges would increase.
Checked Baggage will be charged on a per piece basis up to a maximum combined weight of 15kg. Anything over 15kg will be charged as excess in addition to the per piece checked baggage handling fee.
Guests travelling with only hand luggage will not be charged.
Air Asia’s statement, issued in conjunction with a media conference given by CEO Tony Fernandes, noted, “Previously, the cost of checked baggage was automatically included in every fare; meaning those travelling with only hand luggage were subsidising those travelling with heavier, checked baggage.
“Now, each guest will pay only for the bags they wish to travel with.â€
It also pointed out, “Lighter baggage weight on board the aircraft means burning less fuel, hence, less pollution and a better environment. Fewer checked baggage improve airport efficiency and will eventually lead to shorter check-in queues.â€
