Air Berlin says it is ready for “moderate growth” after emerging from the worst crisis in the history of the airline industry
Germany’s second-largest airline company ended the 2009 financial year with pre-tax and interest profits of 28.5 million euros, up from the previous year’s figure of two million euros.
The company flew almost 28 million passengers last year on a fleet of 152 aircraft.
Air Berlin expects to grow faster than the overall market this year, which IATA has predicted as a 4.5% percent increase in passengers carried, to a record of more than 30 million with a focus on intra-European flights.
CEO Joachim Hunold said: "We have reached all the goals we had set ourselves for 2009.
“This applies in particular to the significant improvement of Air Berlin’s revenue quality, which was achieved by optimizing our capacities and adjusting our route portfolio.
“Air Berlin’s business model proved its strength throughout the worst crisis in the history of the airline industry.
“Furthermore, we were able to strengthen our market position in a challenging European market environment. Air Berlin is well-positioned for moderate growth and increased profitability."
The carrier’s position in the German and the European market was strengthened through by the acquisition of TUIfly’s city connections last autumn.
Air Berlin had about 8,278 staff at the end of last year, down from 8,311 in 2008.
