AirAsia considering Dubai flights
Asia’s largest low-cost airline is in talks to start flights from Southeast Asia to Dubai.
CEO and founder Tony Fernandes has been in Dubai to discuss flying to one of the Emirate’s two airports, Dubai International or Al Maktoum International.
"There are opportunities for airlines like AirAsia, and I could bring a lot of Asians to Dubai," Fernandes said.
"Dubai is building the largest airport in the world and it can’t just be for Emirates Airline and Flydubai," Fernandes said referring to a $32 billion project recently announced by the government.
If successful, AirAsia would pi itself against Dubai’s low-cost carrier Flydubai, which has been expanding aggressively in recent years.
The new A330neo aircraft, Fernandes said, would give the carrier opportunity to build a hub to expand into Africa and Europe.
The carrier’s long haul division AirAsia X started flights to neighbouring Abu Dhabi in 2010 but suspended service after just a few months.
