AirAsia says domestic air travel is bouncing back strongly
AirAsia Group has reported a strong rebound in domestic markets at its airlines across Southeast Asia.
In the 2020 fourth quarter it saw a 31% increase in passenger traffic in Thailand while AirAsia Philippines carried more than double the number of passengers compared to September 2020.
AirAsia Indonesia reported an elevenfold increase.
Along with its main Malaysia unit, the Group has rebounded to nearly 60% of pre-pandemic domestic capacity.
"Post-Covid, the group expects to benefit from a leaner and optimised airline operation established in 2020, concentrating on recovering the most profitable and popular routes," it said in a statement.
AirAsia Malaysia had a load factor of 72% in the fourth quarter, while in Indonesia it tripled its operating capacity in December.
"The group is encouraged by the strong rebound in demand and expects AirAsia Indonesia to fully recover to its pre-Covid domestic capacity in Q1’2021."
For the quarter AirAsia carried total of 2.8 million passengers.
