AirAsia will relocate to Melbourne Avalon later this year
AirAsia has confirmed it is pressing ahead with a move to Melbourne’s second airport Avalon.
Lower airport fees will translate to lower fares for customers, the Malaysia based budget carrier says, along with a more efficient airport experience.
It is also a milestone for the city, as Melbourne Avalon will effectively become the city’s second international airport when long-haul affiliate AirAsia X commences services.
No start date for Avalon flights have been announced but the airline is prepping for a relocation later this year.
"We are currently working closely with Avalon, tourism partners in the region and other relevant authorities to ensure our infrastructure and facilities needs are being met to ensure a smooth transition later this year," said AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail.
Benyamin expects the airline to carry about 500,000 passengers annually.
Other advantages of a move to Avalon include cheaper on-site parking, brand new airport infrastructure and no toll road fees as is the case at Melbourne Tullamarine.
AirAsia expects to confirm a start date for Avalon flights in the coming months.
AirAsia X will serve the airport with twice daily flights to its Kuala Lumpur hub, which offers onward connections to 130 destinations across Asia Pacific the Middle East and Hawaii.
