Airbnb publishes its own travel mag
Not content with disrupting the global accommodation industry, Airbnb is entering the travel content business.
The company has unveiled the first issue of Pineapple, a 128-page magazine to be distributed free to Airbnb hosts, with an initial print run of 18,000 copies.
The magazine contains no advertising and has features focused on three main destinations – San Francisco, London and Seoul, South Korea.
In the magazine, an editorial says its aim is ‘to explore our fundamental values: sharing, community and belonging, and inspire and motivate exploration, not just within the cities featured, but within any space a reader finds themselves.’
Andrew Schapiro, head of brand creative for Airbnb, said the company had considered starting a magazine for several years.
He said the magazine would be sent to Airbnb hosts worldwide and will also be available at the Seoul Design Festival taking place this month.
Pineapple also will be sold in bookstores in North America and Europe, priced at $12 in the US, £9 in the UK and €11 in mainland Europe.
The company is also seeking submissions from the Airbnb community for subsequent issues.
The magazine will be produced quarterly and Shapiro hinted that advertising may be sold in the future to fund production costs.
