Airbnb touts lower commission to lure hotels away from OTAs
The ‘Airbnb is for Everyone’ tagline extends to hoteliers too.
The home sharing platform last week published an open letter to independent boutique hotel and B&B owners railing against the hefty commissions charged by OTAs.
It aims to lure hoteliers with ‘unique spaces and personal hospitality.’
That includes commission rates of 3-5% among a range of changes which includes new tools such as a recently announced guest loyalty program.
The changes ‘will help us better partner with hospitality entrepreneurs and make it easier for you to connect with our community of guests,’ it said.
"Time and again, small business owners told us that the fees charged by travel agents like Expedia and Booking — which can be as high as 30% — are too high."
"We want Airbnb to be for everyone, including professional hospitality providers that offer unique spaces."
The company cites data from the US Department of Commerce which confirmed inbound travel to the US had fallen but the number using Airbnb in the US was up significantly.
