Airbus unveils new name for Bombardier CSeries
It’s farewell Bombardier CSeries and hello to the new Airbus A220.
Airbus has unveiled the rebrand for the Bombardier regional jet as it formalizes its majority stake in the Canadian plane maker’s CSeries production.
The 120-seater CS100 is now the A220-100, and the larger CS300 jet will be known as the A220-300.
"Everyone at Airbus has been looking forward to this historic moment. Today, we are thrilled to welcome the A220 to the Airbus family and are honored to see it wearing its new Airbus colors for the first time," said Guillaume Faury, Airbus president.
The two plane makers got together after heavy tariffs were proposed for Bombardier jets following rival Boeing’s claim of unfair commercial practices.
The Airbus-Bombardier deal allows CSeries jets to be made in the US at Airbus’ new Alabama plant.
After that blindsided Boeing it has fought back with its own joint venture deal with Brazil’s Embraer, which is Bombardier’s traditional rival in the regional jet market.
"I pay tribute to all the women and men at Bombardier and the supply chain who have strived over the past years to bring this fantastic aircraft to the world. The A220 now enters a new phase in its career with all Airbus’ resources behind it," Faury added.
