Airline waives change fees as double storm approaches Hawaii

Hawaiian Airlines is waiving change fees for flights as the islands prepare to be hit by a hurricane and tropical storm.

The airline said reservation change fees and differences in fares for customers who need to change their travel plans because of Hurricane Iselle and Tropical Storm Julio will be waived for those due to travel on Thursday, August 7 or Friday, August 8.

This applies if the ticket was issued on/before August 4, 2014.

However, the airline said that all flights are operating as scheduled at the moment and normal refund rules will apply.

It added that changes must be made prior to the departure time of originally scheduled flight and ticketed on/before August 12, 2014.

Hurricane Iselle is expected to bring heavy rains, high surf and winds by Thursday, with landfall likely on the US state by Friday.

The National Weather Service has also issued a tropical storm warning for the island of Hawaii and a flash flood warning for all of the islands of the state, as Tropical Storm Julio prepares to arrive two or three days later.

"This is a very powerful storm, very well put together," Weather Channel meteorologist Ari Sarsalari told USA Today. "So it looks like the double whammy for Hawaii.”

Tourists on Oahu, home to Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, have been gathering water, canned food and other supplies.

Chris Pruett of Waikiki was anticipating a silver lining in that big storms bring surfers to the islands: "It tends to generate good waves,” he told the Associated Press.
