Airlines issue waivers as Hurricane Florence inches closer to East Coast
Hurricane Florence is not due to make landfall until the end of the week but flight waivers from several airlines are already now in effect.
States of emergency have already been declared in Maryland and the Carolinas with potentially thousands of flights likely to be canceled or delayed.
Several airlines have already announced rules for changing itineraries with fees waived for travel dates up to and including September 17, depending on the carrier.
American Airlines customers may rebook up to September 19 for flights that were scheduled this week across dozens of airports from Georgia to Virginia.
These include Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington, Asheville, Charlotte, Richmond and Norfolk.
JetBlue extends its rebooking window to September 20, and includes services to and from Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC, and Raleigh/Durham and Richmond in Virginia.
Southwest Airlines’ waivers cover flights from September 11-17 and may be rebooked within 14 days of the original date.
Allegiant Airlines is also waiving change fees for travel this week covering cities in the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia.
Meanwhile Delta Air Lines says it will cap fares for routes serving select cities in the affected areas between Georgia and Virginia.
It is calculated on flight distance and market ranging from $299 in Economy up to $799 in the forward cabin.
