Airlines request help from Caribbean governments

Caribbean airlines require help from the governments of the region if they are to recover financially, according to an influential body in the region.

The Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s aviation committee has recommended the governments provide marketing support for local airlines and be the first choice of travel for government employees.

The committee is chaired by Conrad Aleong, the president and chief executive officer of BWIA – the financially stricken airline based in Trinidad.

The committee called on local airlines to meet regularly to discuss common problems and work together, especially in the areas of maintenance, airports and aircraft purchasing, to find ways to reduce costs.
