Airlines warn of disruption due to Italy strikes today
Strike action in Italy is expected to cause flight disruption today.
There is a 24-hour general strike across the country and a ground handling strike specifically in Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate.
British Airways has had to cancel a ‘very small’ number of services and expects the most affected airports to be Pisa and Genoa.
"We will be using larger aircraft, where possible, to help affected customers and are doing all we can to reduce any disruption," it said.
Alitalia has been forced to cancel several flights and modify its domestic and international flight schedule.
Fights departing during a ‘guaranteed period’ between 7am and 10 am and from 6pm to 9pm Rome time will operate as scheduled, it said.
Bigger aircraft will operate on several domestic and international routes to limit the disruption.
Extra call centre staff have been drafted in and additional staff will be on hand at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate to assist customers.
Meanwhile, EasyJet said it was working to minimise the impact of this strike on its services but also expects a small number of cancellations and some delays.
"Although this situation is outside our control, we do understand that it can be a very frustrating situation for all customers travelling," it said.
It told customers to still arrive at the airport for their original departure time because check-in and bag-drop times will not be extended.
