Airport near miss incident sparks FAA probe

The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into another airport near-miss incident.

Two planes came close to colliding at Portland International Airport in Oregon.

An Alaska Airlines pilot requested a go-around due to bad weather at Portland.

When doing so the plane veered over into the airspace of a SkyWest Airlines plane which was taking off.

The two jets were around 1,800 feet apart but less than 250 feet vertically

The SkyWest flight didn’t have to take any evasive action and departed as normal.

“At no point was the safety of the flight compromised, :SkyWest said.

Alaska Airlines said it is ‘internally reviewing this event.’

“The safety of our guests and employees is always our top priority.”

It said ‘an air traffic controller instructed the pilot to turn away from the SkyWest aircraft.’

“The crew followed cockpit indications and reacted immediately to increase separation from the other aircraft.”

Airport near-miss events are becoming more common with staffing shortages in air traffic control being flagged as partly to blame.
