Airport security staff to get better training
Airport security staff are to get better training thanks to a new set of standards brought in to help cope with an influx of passengers in 2012.
For the first time, airport security staff will be able to take a new qualification geared towards their specific role – the level 2 Diploma in Aviation Security from City & Guilds and Edexcel.
The new skills framework for aviation security has been developed by GoSkills with extensive contribution from key employers.
Julie Blasbery, head of industry skills for aviation at GoSkills, said the new standards were a welcome fillip to the aviation industry as the UK gears up for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and needs to accommodate the anticipated increase in passengers arriving and departing from UK airports.
Debbie Thompson, training development manager at BAA Airports Ltd, said. “The review highlighted some a clear skills gaps including that of a qualification requirement for staff working in aviation security – a highly regulated section of the industry with stringent training requirements.
“The new qualification should prove highly motivational to airport staff and collectively benefit staff, airport management and passengers.â€
