Airport staff postpone strike following Brussels attack
Strikes at Australia’s major international airports have been postponed in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Brussels.
Staff at Adelaide, Cairns, Darwin, Perth and Townsville had already started industrial action before yesterday’s explosions at Brussels’s international airport and on the Brussels underground.
However, a planned 24-hour strike at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane has been postponed followed a plea by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull for the Community and Public Sector Union to reconsider its actions.
Although Turnbull said he had been assured there would be adequate security at airports, he asked staff not to strike following the terrorist attacks and ‘to pursue their complaints through other means’.
Staff have been battling for two years for improved pay and conditions.
