Airports brace for busiest Memorial Day travel weekend for a decade
The start of the summer travel season kicks off this weekend, with airports braced for a busy few days.
The Memorial Day travel exodus has already begun with some airports reporting a rise in passenger traffic.
The Transportation Security Administration expects more than seven million travelers through passenger screening this weekend from Saturday through Monday.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says that this Memorial Day travel is gearing up to be the busiest for more than a decade.
This is despite the high airfares at the moment.
The United CEO also has concerns over whether the air traffic control system can cope, given its staff shortages.
“This weekend will be a test of the system,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.
“All of us have airline stories from last summer and the disruptions that took place then.”
“It’s important that that not happen again.”
The DOT reported overall flight cancellation rates at 2% during the first quarter of 2023.
This is well down on last summer.
