Airports Commission chief tipped for new banking role
Sir Howard Davies, who is leading the government’s review into how to increase runway capacity in the southeast of England, is expected to be confirmed as the new chairman of the government-controlled Royal Bank of Scotland this week.
His appointment could be announced on Thursday when the bank delivers its end of year results, although it is not yet clear when he would take up the role, which might lead to him relinquishing other similar positions.
Since the financial crisis hit in 2008, bank chairman have been discouraged from holding simultaneous roles with other companies.
In addition to chairing the Airports Commission, Sir Howard is also chairman of insurance business Phoenix Group, he chairs Morgan Stanley’s risk committee and he also sits on the board of insurance company Prudential.
The Airports Commission has yet to make its final recommendations on where to build an additional runway, having already stated the decision will not be taken until after the General Election in May.
