Airports Commission to set agenda
Sir Howard Davies, the man charged with coming up with the best method to increase airport capacity in the UK, will announce today the names of those who influence his decision.
In addition to revealing who will sit alongside him on the commission, Sir Howard, the former head of the Financial Services Authority, will also detail what his investigation will cover.
He has been tasked with producing a full report on airport capacity by 2015, but he is expected to bring out an interim report by the end of next year. This will narrow down the option for increasing airport capacity in the southeast of England.
The coalition government has ruled out further expansion at Heathrow during the current parliament, but they are coming under increasing to give the go-ahead for a third runway at London’s premier hub to be built after the next general election.
Meanwhile, today’s Telegraph reports that Birmingham Airport has proposed the government imposes a congestion charge on London airports and waives air passenger duty from regional hubs to encourage airlines to use them instead.
