Airports in Philippines resume operations

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has cleared all Philippine airports to resume operations, except for Tacloban, which was extensively damaged by super typhoon Haiyan.

Operations there are restricted to humanitarian and evacuation efforts.

A total of 12 airports in the Philippines were closed Friday as a precautionary measure due to the approach of Haiyan, and hundreds of flights were cancelled.

The storm, one of the most powerful ever to hit the Philippines, ripped through the coastal provinces of Leyte and Samar, causing massive damage.

Tacloban was worst hit and early estimates suggested that more than 10,000 people may have died there.

Philippine president Benigno Aquino has declared a "state of national calamity" to speed relief efforts for victims of the typhoon.

Thousands of survivors are still desperately waiting for the aid effort to reach them.
