Alaska Airlines taps Gogo for inflight Wi-Fi upgrade
Alaska Airlines has selected Gogo to bring broadband inflight Wi-Fi to its entire fleet.
Gogo will install its 2Ku inflight satellite based system on the airline’s entire fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft.
Gogo’s 2Ku service will be installed on up to 50 Boeing 737 planes by the end of 2018 and then all of Alaska and Virgin America’s mainline fleet will be 2Ku Wi-Fi enabled by 2020.
Comparable to on the ground Wi-Fi speeds, 2Ku allows passengers to stream rich content including audio and video.
At 70 megabits per second, Gogo says 2Ku is several times faster than the air-to-ground Wi-Fi tech Alaska Air planes currently use.
"Our guests will soon be able to connect in the air, just as they do out and about on the ground helping make their travel time more relaxing and productive—whether that’s scrolling through Facebook, checking email, or watching what’s trending on YouTube," said Andrew Harrison, chief commercial officer at Alaska Airlines.
