Alaska operators emphasize new trails
A new Explore Denali Excursion series at Alaska’s Denali National Park offers four new hiking options for visitors: Steps Through Time, Denali Highway Adventure, Stampede Trail Van Adventure and the Denali Geology Tour. All excursions are led by an interpretive guide and contain various levels of physical activity from moderate hiking, to van-based tours with short walks. With increasing demand for bear viewing several new tours are being offered. From Anchorage, Rust’s Flying Service offers three tours: to Redoubt Bay Lodge, Katmai National Park and Lake Clark National Park. The Redoubt Bay Lodge package is a six-hour tour and priced at $550 per person and includes the flight to and from the lodge, a boat excursion, and lunch. The Katmai National Park package is a 12 hour tour and the cost is $695 per person and includes a box lunch and flight to Brooks Falls. The Lake Clark National Park is a 10-12 hour tour and the cost is $695 per person includes the plane and boat ride, snack and lunch, as well as available hot tub and kayaks. Sea Hawk Air offers a day trip departing from Kodiak and flies passengers out to either Kodiak Island National Wildlife Refuge or Katmai National Park. Admiralty Island, near Juneau, is home to an estimated 1,500 brown bears, more than the entire lower 48 states combined. Alaska Fly ‘n’ Fish Charters offers a 5.5-hour tour from May-September.
