Albuquerque finds rocky road to national attention
Albuquerque, New Mexico has ambitions of becoming a nationally known destination, but a consultant’s report shows it has a long ways to go.
There are safety concerns, a lack of upscale hotel rooms near the convention center and limited downtown activity, according to Egret Communications.
The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau hired the company to do a study that included comparisons to other Southwest US cities such as Denver and San Antonio.
“As a tourism economic engine, this is an eight-cylinder vehicle firing on three of the eight cylinders,” said the report.
The report also said the downtown area was too spread out for tourism.
To compete for convention business, the area needs more upscale hotels close to the convention center, according to the study.
On the positive side, the report praised the area’s climate, its International Sunport and its golf courses.
