Alitalia plane skids off the runway
A plane’s landing gear malfunctioned during a thunderstorm causing it to skid off the runway at Rome’s Fiumicino airport yesterday.
Ten people were ‘slightly’ injured on the Alitalia flight from Madrid to Rome which was carrying 151 passengers, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
The emergency slides on the Airbus A320 were used for passengers to leave the plane.
The pilot had warned air traffic control ahead of time after realising that the plane’s right wheels had failed to deploy, the report said.
The plane then toppled on its right wing during landing and could be seen on its side near the runway, it added.
The report cited officials as saying there were around 10 "code green" light injuries among the passengers, who were treated by medical staff at the airport.
The national air transport safety agency said it had opened an investigation into the incident and dispatched two officers to examine the plane.
