Allegiant plans first international routes to Mexico

Low cost carrier plans to finally spread its wings with flights overseas.

The Las Vegas-based airline has filed an application with the US department of transportation to launch its first international routes, with vacation destinations in Mexico on the radar.

Allegiant is staying tight-lipped on destinations it will fly to in Mexico and from which US airports.

"Offering service to Mexico will provide a whole new array of options for travelers to discover world-class destinations that may have been previously out of reach. Unlike other U.S. carriers, Allegiant has always been laser-focused on leisure travel and providing access to affordable, non-stop flights," said Allegiant CEO Maury Gallagher.

The airline has offered charter flights from Pittsburgh and Indianapolis to Cancun as part of Apple vacations packages but this will be the first scheduled services if it gets approval.

"We believe that providing scheduled service to Mexico will also be of great economic benefit, by stimulating traffic and providing additional competition in the international leisure market," Gallagher added.

There is intense competition on US-Mexico routes especially to vacation hotspots, although Allegiant has carved out its own niche by mostly focusing on underserved regional airports in the US.

It will likely continue that strategy.
