Aloha Air blames a rival for second bankruptcy since 2004

Tuesday, 25 Mar, 2008 0

Who’s to blame for Aloha Airlines filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection?

Don’t blame the airline, says Aloha. Blame go!

“It is a travesty and a tragedy that the illegal actions of a competitor and other factors completely beyond our control have forced us to take this action,” Aloha CEO David Banmiller is quoted as saying by the AP.

The carrier also cited record-high fuel costs, according to the Honolulu StarBulletin.

Aloha’s filing follows more than a year of intense sniping between go! and both of Hawaii’s bigger established carriers, Hawaiian and Aloha.

Aloha lost $81 million in 2007 and $11 million this past January.

Aloha is suing go! for misusing confidential information, according to press reports.

The carrier said it will keep flying as normal, as long as the bankruptcy court overseeing its case accepts its financial plan to stay in operation.
