Amadeus to launch ‘next generation airline pricing’

Monday, 26 May, 2005 0

Amadeus is already gearing up for a deregulated GDS environment says managing director UK and Ireland, Stephane Durand.

“The fee the airline pays depends on the route so on competitive routes such as London-Dublin the airline would pay lower GDS fees than something like London-Tokyo, where the competition is less intense,” he told TravelMole.

“The fees for the airline are lower where the margin is lower,” he said.

Durand claims Amadeus was the first GDS to offer airlines lower fees in return for full access to fares, through its Full Content Guaranteed Option. “It means agents know they are getting the best fares,” he said.

According to Durand, 50 airlines have signed up to the Full Content Guaranteed Option scheme, and while the GDS has signed a deal with Aer Lingus, it has yet to sign up the UK’s major no-frills carriers, Ryanair and Easyjet.

However, Amadeus-connected agents can access fares from the two carriers through Fare Seeker, which is part of the Vista desktop solution, and compares GDS fares with web fares and no-frills airline fares.

Fare Seeker uses screen-scraping technology to extract fares from the websites of Ryanair and Easyjet, but Durand hopes the GDS may sign agreements with the airlines in the future.

“Next year we will have a menu-based price offering for airlines – it is the next generation commercial model,” he said.

In a deregulated environment GDSs may be able to offer airlines biased listings, putting them higher up the search screen in return for higher fees, but Durand has ruled this out.

“We have no interest in bias listing because our base is to be universal and neutral. It would be an absolute suicide to bias the display,” he told TravelMole.

He added that agents could choose to bias the display by using Amadeus technology.
