American Airlines employees to undergo anti-racism training
American Airlines has vowed to improve its image after the NAACP issued a travel advisory against the airline in October.
From next year every employee will be required to complete annual anti-racism ‘implicit bias’ training, American said.
"We are proud of the diversity and inclusion initiatives already in place at American, but we know we can do even better. So we viewed the feedback as an opportunity," CEO Doug Parker wrote in a letter to all workers.
The training will comprise both in-person and online modules.
Parker said airline executives met with NAACP leaders this week after the organization called out a ‘pattern of disturbing incidents reported by African-American passengers.’
American said it is also hiring an independent firm to monitor its hiring practices, and it will revamp its internal procedure dealing with discrimination complaints.
"American Airlines can set a new standard in corporate diversity and inclusion, and we are humbled by the opportunity before us to do so," Parker said.
