American Airlines national ground stop lifted as outage resolved
American Airlines has resumed flights after a brief national outage threatened to be the Nightmare before Christmas for customers.
Earlier this morning the airline requested and was granted a network-wide FAA ground stop on all flights.
It was experiencing a technical outage, it said.
“A technical issue is affecting American flights this morning. Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” it posted.
It came at one of the busiest flying days of the year.
Bloomberg reported it may have been a software outage used for balance and weight calculations for each flight but the airline hasn’t disclosed this.
American later said it was a ‘vendor technology issue’ without giving any details.
There were more than 41,000 commercial flights on Christmas Eve in 2023.
Luckily, in less than two hours, systems were back up.
