American Airlines rolls out non-binary gender option
American Airlines is the latest major carrier to offer non-binary gender options for flight bookings.
Customers can now use the ‘U’ or ‘X’ gender neutral code on their bookings but must do so via a call center.
It will soon be extended to its online booking process.
"We recently completed system updates in an ongoing effort to offer non-binary gender selections. We are glad to be able to better accommodate the gender preferences of our travelers and team members," the airline said.
However the airline urged all customers to use the gender already issued on their government issued ID like a driver’s license, as tickets and ID need to match for security screening procedures.
More than one-third of US states offer a ‘X’ designation on ID documents but a US passport still only has a male and female option.
United Airlines was the first to issue non-binary designation for customers but other major airlines have been slow to follow.
Southwest Airlines is looking at technical solutions to roll it out but has no time fram#e of when this will likely happen.
