American Airlines seals USD12 billion Dreamliner deal
American Airlines has dealt a blow to Airbus by opting for a huge $12 billion order for Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
It cancelled a major order for Airbus A350s and will instead more than double its 787 fleet by buying 47 Dreamliners.
The order is for 22 787-8s which will start arriving in 2020 and 25 787-9s.
That will take American’s Dreamliner fleet to 89 planes, making it the largest 787 customer in the West.
"This was a difficult decision between the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 and A330neo and we thank both manufacturers for their aggressive efforts to earn more of American’s business. In the end, our goal to simplify our fleet made the 787 a more compelling choice," American Airlines president Robert Isom said.
As part of the deal American and Boeing agreed to defer delivery of 40 737 jets which were due between 2020 and 2022 to ‘better align with planned retirements of other narrowbody aircraft.’
"This new order is a powerful endorsement of the 787 family’s unique passenger appeal and unmatched ability to help airlines open new routes and grow profitably," Boeing Chief Executive Kevin McAllister said.
