Ash cloud now disrupting Bali flights
A volcanic ash cloud from Mount Merapi in Indonesia has settled over Bali and disrupted arrivals and departures from the island.
Jetstar has cancelled and rescheduled flights to and from Denpasar because of the ash plume.
Night flights have been rescheduled or re-routed because pilots need to make visual checks on approach to Denpasar airport.
Affected flights were being re-routed in some cases via Darwin.
“We’ve taken a safety-first approach to ensure we can operate safe, efficient operations into and out of Denpasar International Airport and then providing the appropriate response,” said a Jetstar spokesman.
Jetstar says it will keep a close eye on the ash plume and is offering passengers refunds or changes to their flights.
The ash plume has also affected Jakarta flights by other carriers, including Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Malaysia Airlines. MAS flights to Yogyakarta and Bandung remain cancelled.
And there are more concerns about the Philippines where authorities have advised pilots to avoid flying near clouds of fine ash shooting out from the crater of Mount Bulusan volcano.
