Ash fails to stop Brits travelling, says bedbank
Bed bank youtravel.com says the volcanic ash cloud has deterred less people from travelling abroad than was first anticipated, declaring summer sales up 20% for April compared to last year.
Its UK sales and marketing director Paul Riches says half those whose flights were disrupted have rebooked and that figure is set to climb when all the rebooking admin has been carried out.
He said: “While the ash cloud did cause massive, unprecedented disruption, it seems that the long-term affect on people’s travel plans is less than initially expected.”
The company says the Canary Islands are seeing strong growth with sales doubling against last summer. Riches believes this is down to the bedbank offering more upscale product in Gran Canaria.
Bookings for Turkey are up 30 per cent, Egypt up 24 per cent, Malta by 62 per cent and Cyprus has made a recovery after a slower summer last year with growth just climbing above 30 percent.
