Three Thomas Cook Airlines rescue flights have flown from Glasgow to pick up passengers from Cancun, Heraklion and Sharm El Sheikh.
One from Newcastle left to fly holidaymakers home from Lanzarote prior to UK airspace restrictions being lifted last night.
These flights were due to return last night along with 10 other aircraft from short and mid-haul destinations, repatriating around 2,500 passengers in total.
The company has more than 50,000 British holidaymakers to bring home from overseas.
Group CEO Manny Fontenla-Novoa said: “We have been working around the clock with our network of global partners to find alternative means of getting our customers home, and keep customers in the UK informed of the latest developments.”
Thomas Cook said 1,000 customers are to be transported back to Southampton on new cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse (see separate story).
