At least 18 dead at Paris hotel fire
At least 15 people were killed and dozens hurt in a fire that swept through a hotel in central Paris early Friday near the Galeries Lafayette luxury department store, reported Reuters.
The blaze gutted the six-story Paris-Opera hotel, and children and foreigners were believed to be among the dead and injured.
The French Red Cross said the fire was one of the deadliest to have hit Paris in the last 20 years. French media said many of the victims were immigrants housed by the city authorities in the hotel.
The fire began in the middle of the night while many of the victims were asleep.
Around 15 people, some of whom jumped from the hotel’s windows, were taken to hospital in a serious condition suffering from burns, trauma and the effects of smoke inhalation.
