Atlanta History Center to Host Norman Rockwell Exhibit

The Atlanta History Center offers a nostalgic look at the past with Norman Rockwell’s Home for the Holidays, a traveling exhibition on display Nov. 22-Feb. 15, 2009.

During his 47-year affiliation with The Saturday Evening Post, Norman Rockwell was celebrated for his special holiday cover illustrations, which were commissioned to mark a full spectrum of annual events for an enthusiastic public, from Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year to Valentine’s Day and April Fools’ Day.

Throughout the decades, Rockwell’s holiday depictions shifted in subject and style, resulting in a broad range of imagery inspired by both the past and the present. This exhibition from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass., features original Saturday Evening Post cover tearsheets, including memorable images such as the 1939 Santa Claus cover Extra Good Boys and Girls and 1948 family portrait Christmas Homecoming.

From his first cover at the age of 22 to his last cover in 1963,  Rockwell’s work for The Saturday Evening Post charmed audiences for six decades. Rockwell became the leading cover artist for the Post, and it is his name that most often comes to mind when the Post is mentioned. Hundreds of thousands of magazines were added to the print run to handle the increased demand when a Rockwell image was to appear on the cover. (404-814-4000, atlantahistorycenter.com)
