ATTA Travel Trends show pent-up demand for Africa trips
Demand is still high for trips to Africa after nearly two years of disruption, with over 50% of consumers showing interest.
The inaugural ATTA Travel Trends survey found customers want to travel to the continent for their first main vacation as soon as restrictions are lifted.
The survey confirmed continued strong interest in Africa with 33% of respondents saying they had visited the continent more than three times before with 7% having visited three times, 12% twice and 18% at least once.
There are good prospects for the market as over 14% said they had not travelled to Africa before but are interested.
Some 26% of respondents said they haven’t booked their trip yet because of the pandemic, although 35% have used the time well to research and make plans for their next vacation.
Consumers said they are mainly looking for flexible booking terms and ensuring they are double vaccinated.
They also need to be assured that clear Covid protocols are being demonstrated by travel and accommodation providers and they don’t want to quarantine on their return home.
Just over 2,500 consumers responded to the survey which ran from July to September 2021.
"The results from the first ATTA Travel Trends have demonstrated to our members that there is a huge amount of pent-up demand for Africa. We look forward to conducting this global barometer each year to examine trends and broaden our members understanding of their target audience," said Kate Kenward, ATTA managing director.
"It’s no surprise that safaris and wildlife scored the highest on the list of favourite vacation activities in this survey, but it was interesting to see that travellers to Africa are also very interested in cultural experiences, beaches, history and cities."
