An Australian tourist is recovering in hospital after being assaulted by a group of villagers in rural India.
William K James from Melbourne, was beaten up after allegations of ‘misbehaving with women’ in the village of Kondanakoppa, Karnataka,
He was travelling to Badami to Bagalkot by bus but got off and found his way to the village.
As well as being assaulted he was tied up with rope.
"The tourist was alone and had taken a bus ticket to travel from Badami to Bagalkot. We are trying to determine why he got off the bus and was found in an interior village. The residents in the village alleged that he misbehaved with women, and in response, attacked him," a local official said.
Police are investigating but no arrests have been made yet.
"We are trying to ascertain how many people were involved in the assault and their identities," a police spokesman said.
Doctors at a local hospital treating him said he was inebriated.
Konkanakoppa village is around 17 km from Badami which is a popular tourist spot for its ancient cave temples dating back more than 1,500 years.
