Aussie travellers face higher airfares
An AAP report says that Australian travellers face having to fork out more to fly to the United Kingdom after British Airways announced plans to increase its fuel surcharge.
Britain’s flagship airline, which has an alliance with Qantas for the “kangaroo route” between the UK and Australia, has blamed record high oil prices for forcing it to hike its fuel surcharge for the third time this year.
The surcharge for long-haul flights to destinations including Australia will rise by STG30 ($A70.42) to STG116 ($A272.30) and be added on to the cost of a return fare.
The price hike comes into effect for all flights booked from Thursday.
Analysts believe other airlines will follow British Airway’s lead and drive up airfare prices.
