Australians Lead the Way with “Clean Cruising”
Did you know that a typical 10 night South Pacific cruise generates almost 2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per person, which is quite a cost to the environment!
New website CleanCruising.com.au has confronted this problem Clean Cruising’s General Manager Dan Russell, saying that they offer cruise passengers a clean choice for the first time, adding, “More Australians are looking for sustainable travel solutions, but until now there’s been no way to carbon offset a cruise holiday.”
Clean Cruising, a new division of innovative agency GlobeNet Travel, has partnered with the not-for-profit organisation Carbon Neutral to plant Australian native trees to combat the carbon emissions generated by cruise vessels, with what is believed to be a world first, Clean Cruising absorbing the cost and sponsoring the tree planting themselves, unlike other carbon offset programs which charge customers an additional levy.
For passengers who book with their agency, Clean Cruising calculates the environmental impact of their cruise by combining Google Earth cruise route mapping with data from both industry and independent researchers.
They then plant the required number of trees to offset these emissions and customers receive a certificate verifying how many trees were planted on their behalf.
Angela Tillier, Marketing Manager of Carbon Neutral, says “Clean Cruising has taken the initiative and made it easy for people to be responsible about their travel choices,” adding, “It’s a great service to their clients and to the environment.”
Mr Russell added, “Many of our clients cruise to some of the world’s most pristine destinations and we’re excited to play a small part in helping to preserve these environments for future generations of cruise lovers.”
