BA faces second day of disruption
Passengers due to fly with British Airways from Heathrow today were facing a second day of disruption.
The airline was forced to cancel 25 flights yesterday and delay others due to “operational reasons” and a further 10 were grounded today. Staff shortages added to the problems.
The disruption could not have come at a worse time. This is one of the busiest periods of the year for the airline industry, and up to 5,000 passengers were reported to have been hit by yesterday’s chaos.
The airline managed to accommodate some of them on later flights, but others had to stay in hotels overnight or rebook.
The flight cancellations came just days after BA resolved a potentially damaging dispute with check-in staff and baggage handlers which averted a strike over the August Bank Holiday.
BA cancelled more than 20 short haul flights on Monday due to a lack of check-in staff. The airline said it was recruiting 60 additional check-in employees.
Technical faults were blamed for the cancellation of three transatlantic flights on Monday – to Chicago, New York and Philadelphia.
A BA spokesman told Ananova online news service: “We apologise sincerely to those customers affected by the disruption to flights at Heathrow Airport. August is the busiest period of the year for British Airways and services at Heathrow are stretched. Our staff are working extremely hard to ensure operations return to normal.”
