BAA smashes August record despite charter slump
BAA had a record August handling 14.2 million passengers.
This compared with 13.7 million the same month last year.
The company, which runs seven UK airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow and Edinburgh and Aberdeen – saw passenger traffic rise 3.7% on long haul and scheduled European routes.
But European charter traffic was again the weakest sector, showing an 11.2% slump in August following a 6.2% year-on-year drop in July. European charter passenger numbers dropped to 1.8 million in August against more than two million the same month last year.
By contrast, price competition among no-frills airlines is helping fuel the growth in European scheduled airline travellers.
