BAA warns environmental protestors
Heathrow owner BAA has issued a warning to environmental protected setting up a ‘climate camp’ at the airport this week.
The airport’s operator said: “With the current terrorism threat, keeping Heathrow safe and secure is a very serious business. Any action taken by the protestors that distracts us or the police from this task is irresponsible and unlawful.
“Around 1.5 million passengers are due to pass through Heathrow during the week of climate camp, many of them families on their summer holidays. It is our responsibility to ensure that we do everything we can to guarantee their safety and comfort during this very busy period.”
Up to 1,000 extra police are reported to have been drafted into Heathrow due to the protestors.
The BAA statement said: “BAA has always respected people’s democratic right to protest lawfully.
“We believe that there is an important debate to be had regarding climate change.
“However, we do not believe our passengers and staff should be harassed or obstructed by any unlawful direct action. Our passengers and staff also have rights.”
Gemma Davis, a spokeswoman for the Camo for Climnate Change, told the BBC: “We’re not here to try to disrupt passengers, we’re here to disrupt BAA.”
A day of ‘mass direct action’ is planned for Sunday.
