Bangkok on edge as election nears
The tourism industry is keeping its fingers crossed in Bangkok this weekend ahead of Sunday’s national elections in Thailand.
Although political demonstrations will be banned on Saturday, there are concerns that protestors could be back on the streets after the next government is formed.
There are reports that Chinese tour operators have postponed departures from China to avoid their clients being caught up in post-election demonstrations.
TTR Daily reports that some tour operators are privately concerned that whatever the election outcome, there will be a sizeable part of the voting population that will be disillusioned and angry over the result.
Tourists have not been targeted by demonstrators during recent political rallies and the concerns of tour operators are more to do with possible issues of access to hotels, shops and cultural sites.
