B&B’s turning into ‘boutiques’
A growing number of Bed and Breakfasts are changing names and added services to describe themselves as “boutique” properties.
“The change from ‘bed and breakfast’ to boutique means added internet services and computer stations and round-the-clock staffs,” said the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The boutique designation seems to go back about 20 years when chains started using the term to describe avant-garde hotels. The reference was generally to hip and intimate hotels.
But boutique has become an attractive word for consumers.
Users of boutique hotels usually desire more personal service and better food than what is offered at the mid-price chains.
The boutiques are proliferating in part because of their profitability. Their profit margins were running almost 30% or almost three percent points higher than full service hotels, according to PKF Consulting.
