Becks and Ali together at community awards
Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has made an emotional appearance in London ahead of the Olympic Games.
He joined footballer David Beckham at a Beyond Sport award ceremony.
The Daily Telegraph reported that the two greats presented a sport in the community award to Matiullah Haidar, 19, who came to Britain four years ago after losing his whole family on a single day in the Afghanistan conflict.
Ali, 70, who has Parkinson’s disease, was accompanied by his wife, Lonnie. She praised the Muhammad Ali Foundation, which inspires young people to help their communities.
Her increasingly frail husband is scheduled to make a series of fund-raising appearances this week and will meet members of the US Olympic team.
Lonnie Ali insists that her husband wants to go on using his fame to assist social change.
His slogan is "The greatest is yet to come" — an appeal to disadvantaged youngsters to escape unpromising starts in life.
There is speculation that both Beckham and Ali may have a role in the Olympics Opening Ceremony.
