Beijing pollution forces people to stay indoors
Air quality in Beijing has hit the ‘worst on record’ with people being warned to stay indoors due to pollution.
Pollution in the Chinese capital rose to 30 to 45 times above recommended safety levels, producing a thick smog and disrupting traffic.
The Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Centre said heavy pollution had been trapped by an area of low pressure, making it harder to disperse, and the conditions were likely to last another two days.
It recommended that children and the elderly stay indoors, and that others avoid outdoor activities, reports the Daily Mail.
The U.S. Embassy has said in the 24 hours before 10am on Sunday, 18 of its hourly readings were ‘beyond index’.
Residents in the city are increasingly taking to the streets wearing safety masks as the conditions continue into the fourth day.
